For UK ecommerce SMEs and scale-ups, site speed is not a developer vanity metric. It is a conversion variable you can measure in the field — then improve with the same seriousness you give paid media. Google’s Chrome UX Report (CrUX) and Core Web Vitals tell you what real visitors experience. Controlled case studies on web.dev show what that experience can do to orders.

The bar: field metrics, not lab theatre

Google’s Core Web Vitals focus on three outcomes real shoppers feel:

  • Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) — good at 2.5 seconds or less
  • Interaction to Next Paint (INP) — good at 200 milliseconds or less
  • Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) — good at 0.1 or less
Google judges these at roughly the 75th percentile of real page loads, separately for mobile and desktop. A Lighthouse green score on the office fibre connection is not the same as CrUX field data on a mid-range Android phone on 4G.

That distinction matters commercially. IRP Commerce’s August 2026 UK/Ireland independent-merchant benchmarks show session conversion at 2.23%, revenue per session at £1.92, and mobile accounting for 63.7% of sales. When most revenue arrives on phones, p75 mobile LCP and INP are board-level metrics — not “tech debt”.

What the evidence says conversion does when pages get faster

Google’s own published case studies remain the cleanest citations for magnitude (always case-specific, never universal guarantees):

Rakuten 24 (web.dev) correlated field Web Vitals with business outcomes, then ran a month-long A/B test of a CWV-optimised landing page against the original. The optimised variant showed a 33.13% higher conversion rate, 53.37% higher revenue per visitor, 15.20% higher average order value, and a 35.12% lower exit rate. Separately, their field analysis associated a good LCP with conversion rates up to 61.13% higher than the overall average — correlation before the controlled test.

T-Mobile (web.dev) tied real-user vitals to bounce and conversion, then improved LCP by 42% overall. Prospect visits with shopping intent saw visit-to-order rate improve by 60% over the same period, alongside a 20% reduction in user site issues.

Neither study claims every UK Shopify store will match those lifts. Both prove the useful point: when you instrument field vitals against purchases, speed stops being abstract.

Cloudflare’s role: edge speed that shoppers actually feel

Cloudflare sits usefully in this story because many UK stores already use it — and because edge configuration changes what CrUX records.

Cloudflare’s own Core Web Vitals overview highlights levers that map to LCP and interactivity: a global CDN to cut latency and Time to First Byte, image delivery and resizing for hero/LCP assets, and Zaraz to load third-party tags away from the browser (protecting interactivity metrics that used to degrade under FID and now matter under INP). Practical companion work on many stacks includes HTTP/3, Brotli, smart caching, and — where appropriate — full-page edge caching patterns such as APO for WordPress.

The CRO discipline is simple: change edge settings, then re-check field LCP/INP/CLS in Search Console and PageSpeed Insights CrUX, not only a lab score. Misconfigured challenges, cache bypasses, or heavy client-side tags can undo the CDN win.

A 30-day CWV-to-conversion sprint

  1. Baseline field truth — Pull CrUX/Search Console for home, collection, PDP and checkout/cart. Note mobile vs desktop pass/fail.
  2. Join vitals to revenue — In GA4 (or your RUM), segment conversion or revenue by LCP/INP buckets where tooling allows. Leadership buys what they can see in pounds.
  3. Fix the biggest paint — Compress and correctly size the LCP image; preload critical fonts carefully; defer non-critical JS.
  4. Protect INP — Audit third parties; prefer edge/tag managers that do not block the main thread; kill dead chat/pixel scripts.
  5. Stabilise CLS — Reserve space for images and embeds (`aspect-ratio` / dimensions); stop late-injecting banners that shove the buy button.
  6. Re-measure and only then scale traffic — Confirm p75 improvement before increasing paid sessions into the same templates.

Practical takeaway

Core Web Vitals “Good” is the floor Google uses for page experience — not the commercial optimum. Pair CrUX field data with purchase outcomes, improve edge delivery (Cloudflare where you already use it), and treat every hundred milliseconds on mobile as conversion work. That is how speed becomes CRO, not a quarterly SEO checkbox.
