Desktop is where teams demo. Mobile is where UK baskets die.
IRP Commerce’s August 2026 benchmarks for UK and Irish independent merchants put mobile at 63.7% of sales (desktop 34.7%, tablet 1.6%), with session conversion at 2.23% and revenue per session £1.92. When nearly two-thirds of sales arrive on phones, mobile checkout UX is not a “phase two” polish task. It is the conversion surface.
This article focuses on form friction and express paths on small screens — complementary to wallet-first strategy pieces, and distinct from post-purchase retention work.
What Baymard keeps proving about forms
Baymard Institute’s checkout research repeatedly shows that field count beats step count as a predictor of pain. Their 2024 benchmark snapshot (still the cited baseline in current Baymard guidance) found the average checkout about 5.1 steps and 11.3 form fields, while many sites need closer to eight fields in total. 17% of shoppers in their quantitative work abandoned because checkout felt too long or complicated.
On mobile, every extra field is worse: smaller viewport, harder typing, easier to lose overview when the keyboard covers guest checkout or the Pay button. Baymard’s mobile checkout guidance is ruthlessly practical:
- Labels above fields (persistent — not disappearing placeholders)
- Single fields for full name, phone and postcode — do not split entities
- Correct keyboards via `type` / `inputmode` (email, tel, numeric)
- Disable autocorrect on names, addresses and emails
- Preserve typed data after validation errors; explain how to fix
- Default billing = shipping; hide Address line 2 behind a link
- Guest checkout visible without scrolling under a keyboard
Express checkout: fewer fields by design
The highest-ROI mobile move is often not micro-copy — it is not asking for the data at all.
Shopify reports that an external Big Three consulting study (April 2023) found Shop Pay lifts conversion by up to 50% versus guest checkout and outpaces other accelerated checkouts by at least 10%; even the presence of Shop Pay was associated with a 5% lower-funnel conversion lift when unused. Treat those as Shopify-published study results, not a promise for every catalogue.
For UK stores, the practical stack is usually:
- Express wallets above the long form (Shop Pay / Apple Pay / Google Pay / PayPal as relevant)
- Guest path default for everyone else
- Account creation after purchase
- Autofill-friendly field names (`autocomplete` attributes) so the residual form is still fast
Invisible security beats puzzle friction
Mobile checkout is also where traditional CAPTCHAs punish humans. Cloudflare reduced CAPTCHAs it serves by 91% via Managed Challenge, cut average challenge time from about 32 seconds to about one second, and reported visitors with human properties were 31% less likely to abandon Managed Challenge than Legacy CAPTCHA. Turnstile extends the same privacy-preserving, low-friction idea to sites that need a challenge widget without training customers on traffic lights.
For CRO: put abuse controls at the edge; do not insert a multi-step puzzle between “Pay now” and a successful charge unless risk scoring demands it.
A mobile-only conversion sprint (14 days)
Days 1–3 — Instrument Funnel: product → cart → checkout started → purchase, split mobile vs desktop. Note drop-offs at first form field and payment.
Days 4–7 — Express first Confirm wallet buttons render above the fold on iOS Safari and Chrome Android; fix broken Apple Pay domains and payment method availability.
Days 8–11 — Form diet Count visible fields on mobile guest checkout. Hide optional lines; merge name fields; fix keyboards and error recovery; move guest CTA above account walls.
Days 12–14 — Challenge & speed Replace Legacy CAPTCHA with Turnstile/Managed Challenge where Cloudflare is in play; re-check mobile LCP/INP on cart and checkout templates (slow checkout pages undo express wins).
Practical takeaway
UK ecommerce conversion is now a mobile product problem. Cut field count, put express wallets first, keep guest checkout obvious, and stop using hostile CAPTCHAs as a substitute for bot management. When most sales already happen on phones, desktop-perfect journeys are a false comfort.
Why this matters for Clarity Growth
Mobile checkout is where performance, UX and payments meet. Clarity Growth helps UK ecommerce brands engineer Shopify and custom checkouts for thumb-first journeys — express wallets, lean forms, Cloudflare-backed challenges — then prove lifts with device-split funnels in growth and optimisation sprints. The aim is fewer abandoned mobiles, not prettier desktop demos.
